The Bago River basin and a large portion of the river itself, including its source, are in the Bago TownshipBago Division. A small portion of the river (the mouth) is in Yangon Division where the BagoRiver joins the Yangon River and, from there, enters the Gulf of Mottama. The entire river system is located between two river systems, the Sittaung River on the east and the Ayeyarwaddy River on the west. The basin has a total area of 5359.1 km2, and the main river is about 331.5 km long, lying between longitudes 95º53´ 30 of the
"E and 96º43´30" E and between latitudes 16º43´ 15" N and 18º26´17" N in lower Myanmar. The Bago River basin is in the tropical monsoon climatic zone of Myanmar, and the average annual precipitation from 1966 to 2003 was 2993 mm at Bago Station. Rainfall in the flood season (from May to September) made up about 91% of the annual total (Fig. 4). January and December are the coldest months (23.7 ºC), and April is the hottest month (30.5 ºC) (Meteorology and Hydrology Department of Yangon, Myanmar). According to the first Schematic Soil Map of Myanmar prepared by B.G Rozanov and Myanmar Soil Scientists in 1965, the main soil types of the study are Meadow Alluvial Soil, Meadow Gley Soil, Turfy Primitive Soil, and Yellow Brown Forest Soil.
